What you need when ordering a genealogical search or search letter


*After a period of time has passed, proof of eligibility is not required for searches:

  • Births 100 years
  • Marriages 50 years
  • Deaths 75 years
  • Stillbirths 50 years

Did you know?

  • The documents should arrive by mail 7-10 days after you place your order. If you require it sooner, you can pick it up in person, ask an agent for details.
  • When the event did not occur in Alberta, contact the appropriate jurisdiction for additional information.
 

What is a search letter?


A search letter confirms that an event has or has not been recorded with Alberta Vital Statistics.


  • You would typically order a search letter only for specific reasons, such as proof you have never been married in Alberta
  • No specific details of the event will be provided


How far back do Alberta records go?

Alberta Vital Statistics has:


  • Alberta birth records from approximately 1850 to present

  • Alberta death and marriage records from approximately 1890 to present
