Cancelling your vehicle registration

Do you have a collection of licence plates hanging in your garage? While old plates can make a great design statement, they can also need more maintenance than you think.

Licence plates that are not returned to a Registry Agent stay registered in the owner's name forever. That means any fines or investigations regarding the licence plate will always start with the owner or owners, even if you've misplaced the plate.

For safety, consider returning a plate you will no longer be using for cancellation.

What you need to cancel your registration

  • Your AMA membership card
  • One piece of ID
  • The registration, plates and stickers (if available)
  • Completed Letter of Authorization form, if someone is cancelling the vehicle registration on your behalf.
  • If the vehicle registration is in two names, both signatures will be required for cancellation.

Fees

The prorated unused portion of the original registration fee (if any) will be refunded by mail.

  • AMA agent processing fee will apply (prices vary by region)
