Step 1: The first step in incorporating
a business is selecting a name for your business.
When choosing a corporation name, make sure that you think carefully
and are happy with your chosen name, as this is the first impression
potential clients will have of your business. Also ensure you comply
with the naming rules listed in the Business Corporations Act, which
you can order from the Alberta Queen's Printer.
Choose a unique corporate name
Your corporate name should be as unique as possible and should include
the following three elements:
1. Distinctive element is the part of your name
that distinguishes your corporation from your competitors.
2. Descriptive element describes the nature of
your business.
3. Legal element can be Limited, Ltd., Incorporated,
Inc., Corporation, or Corp.
Consider the name, “Suzie's Homemade Sweets Limited”
It meets the above criteria as:
• “Suzie's is distinctive
• “Homemade Sweets” is descriptive
• “Limited” is the legal component
Step 2. Find out the availability of a business name
To find out if your business name is available, you should conduct
a NUANS (Newly Upgraded Automated Name Search) search.
This is a search that compares a proposed business name to existing
names in a database. This comparison helps you determine any similarities
between your proposed name and existing names found in the database.
The search produces a listing of names that are most similar. If
the proposed name is available, it will be reserved for 90 days.
Check the name of your business now.
