  • Over 100 hours (both classroom and in-car) training.
  • Observing classroom and in-car sessions led by experienced instructors.
  • All of our instructors are required to complete a thorough police security clearance during the initial screening process.

On-going professional development for all of our instructors:

  • Annual workshops keep our instructors up-to-date with new findings in traffic safety research.
  • Regular instructor meetings where information and knowledge is shared with the team.

Instructor monitoring is thorough and regular and exceeds provincial standards:

  • Twice a year for instructors with more than one year of experience.
  • Four times a year for instructors with less than one year of experience.

Here is a brief summary of the topics covered during the classroom sessions:

  • Introduction to the road - what you need to know before you get going

Successful completion of the classroom sessions requires:

  • A passing grade of 80% on the classroom exam (if necessary the classroom test may be re-written at any AMA centre during regular business hours).
  • Full attendance of the classroom sessions. (18 hours).

Ultimate program is AMA’s most comprehensive program, designed to ease anxiety behind the wheel and create safe drivers for life. Geared towards students who have limited driving experience, are unable to practice on their own or need more one-on-one instruction. This program provides 20 hours (ten 2-hour sessions of in-car instruction). Free Proactive Defensive Driver Course is included 6-12 months after obtaining a Class 5 licence.

Premium program teaches the fundamentals and fine tunes driving skills, while still providing flexibility to individual student needs and includes 14 hours (seven 2-hour sessions of in-car instruction).

Basic program includes 10 hours (5 - two hour sessions) of one on one in-car instruction.

All programs include:
  • Circle check and walk around, safe entry and exit
  • Demonstration drive by Instructor
  • Basic vehicle control - proper techniques for steering, braking and accelerating
  • Introduction to Search, Scan, Identify, Predict, Decide, Execute (SIPDE)
  • Skills including proper visual lead time and use of mirrors
  • Residential intersections, uncontrolled intersections and traffic circles
  • Turning, lane changing and driving on hills and curves
  • Reversing and parking (parallel, angle and perpendicular)
  • Downtown driving, bus lanes and one way streets
  • Freeway driving, rural highways, merging and trip planning
  • Risk assessment and hazard awareness

Booking In-car Sessions

  • The in-car portion of the program typically follows the classroom sessions and is booked in 2 hour sessions.
  • An in-car instructor will call within 2 weeks of your registration to set up the in-car appointments.
  • Flexible lesson times are available, but appointments should be scheduled so there is adequate practice time between sessions.

Successful completion of the in-car sessions requires:

  • A minimum final in-car evaluation of 75%.
  • 100% recorded attendance.

In-car scheduling conflict?

  • In-car sessions may be rescheduled as necessary, however, a minimum 24 hours notice is required to avoid a $50 (plus GST) rescheduling fee.
