Fleet - Remedial Training

AMA Fleet Safety Instructor with Student in truck from back seat

Course Overview

It is recommended that any driver who does not receive a passing grade on the Professional Driver Upgrade (PDU), demonstrating below average driving skills, take remedial training.

  • The participant is made aware of driving habits from instructor feedback, and then by reviewing the initial PDU report with a company supervisor.
  • The participant will then receive a minimum of a 2-hour in-vehicle program targeted at helping he or she become a more proactive driver.

Note: The remedial training should be done soon after a participant has been made aware of his or her driving habits. By having the participant review the driving errors, he or she will begin to think of what they need to change, or what they may not understand before the program.

Time Breakdown

Hours to complete: 2

Coaching: 1 hour 30 minutes
A coaching activity that would include commentary driving by the instructor and whenever possible the participant.

The coaching would focus on the driving habits and skills identified in the original PDU as areas of concern.

Evaluation: 30 minutes
An evaluation drive, again focusing on areas of concern from the original PDU. The company would then be sent a report based on the evaluation drive.

In a case where more than 2 hours of remedial training is recommended, an evaluation would only be done in the final 1/2-hour of training.

*Any participant scoring less than 80 per cent on the initial written test would also be given another test to write after the remedial training.
