AMA Fleet Safety, offers eight online courses for your employees to challenge and improve their driving knowledge and skills.

Fleet managers can assign multiple courses to multiple drivers and track their progress. Employees can complete the online courses when it's convenient for them.

Demerit Reduction Defensive Driver Course

This is a 6.5-hour course providing drivers with a greater awareness of the causes and consequences of unsafe driving. It features seven interactive modules that can be completed individually or together in one study session.

This interactive media course explores:

  • Highway safety and how the driver relates to it
  • The Traffic Safety Act
  • Driver, vehicle and environment issues
  • Various driver impairments, driving emergencies, and driver solutions

Drivers will be presented with information on risk management as well as proactive strategies when driving a vehicle. A final multiple choice knowledge test is written at the end of the course.

A Course Completion Certificate for online courses will be mailed to each individual. Please note these certificates are not available for pick up at AMA Centres. Alberta Transportation regulations require final exams are limited to two attempts to receive a Course Completion Certificate. Participants unsuccessful after two attempts are required to obtain further formal education and training.

This course is certified by Alberta Transportation and provides successful course participants with the opportunity to have three demerits removed from their driver abstract. For more information on Demerit Reduction please go to http://www.transportation.alberta.ca/2172.htm

Safe Backing Course

Learn a practical, common sense approach to the skills and cautions involved in backing a vehicle. The course explores a driver's normal environment for typical hazards when parking and backing.  It then builds a collection of strategies for avoiding the hazards or for coping with them when they are encountered.

This course covers topics such as vehicle inspection, using a spotter, parking, doing a safe turn around in a rural area as it relates to backing the vehicle. Drivers will be presented with information on risk management as well as proactive strategies when backing a vehicle.

This four-part module will teach:

  • Backing procedures
  • Backing assistance signals
  • Driveway dangers
  • How to avoid problem situations

Cost: $30

Approximate completion time:
60 minutes

Commercial Vehicle and Van Handling

Fleet Safety Van Handling Online Course ImageWith a special emphasis on van driving, this online course promotes proactive driving and helps fleet drivers better understand the importance of proactive driving while on the job.

This online course consists of three interactive modules that can be completed individually or together in one study session.

Participants of this program will:

  • Gain a greater awareness of vehicle and driver limitations when operating a commercial van. 
  • How to safely load and operate a van.
  • How to negotiate different driving environments.
  • How to incorporate preventative safety measures.
  • How to deal with emergency situations.

Modules can be completed individually or in one study session.

Using interactive media, this 3-module course teaches participants:

  • The impacts, risks, and warning signs of driver fatigue.
  • How to recognize, understand and manage the effects of fatigue. 
  • The basic principles of fatigue as well as a general understanding of sleep.

This course is designed as a prerequisite to the Driver Fatigue Management – Advanced course.

Proactive Defensive Driver Improvement

Driver Education Fleet Online Proactive Defensive Driver ImageThe proactive defensive driver improvement course provides drivers with a greater awareness of the causes and consequences of unsafe driving as they pertain to their daily driving activities.

The course explores a driver's normal driving environment for:

  • Typical hazards.
  • Driver impairments.
  • Basic vehicle maneuvers.

It then builds a collection of strategies for avoiding the hazards or for coping with them when they are encountered.

This course covers topics such as the SIPDE system as it relates to specific driving environments. Drivers will be presented with information on risk management, vehicle and environmental hazards, as well as strategies to read the driving environment.

Cost: $45 
Approximate Completion Time: 180 minutes

Proactive Driver Assessment

Driver Education Fleet Online Proactive Assessment ImageThis video-based test uses participant interaction to assess driving performance issues.

Participants view a series of driving situations and choose the best response. The course includes:

  • A wide range of driving environments.
  • Real-time situations, from the point of view of the driver.
  • Forty scenarios presented, offering a range of responses.

Participants must choose the best response within a specific time period. The resulting score helps identify driver performance potential.

Trailering

Driver Education Fleet Online Trailering ImageThis online course features six interactive modules that can be completed individually or together in one study session.

It explores driving with a trailer in urban and rural areas, and the typical hazards you may encounter when pulling a trailer. It also offers a collection of strategies for avoiding the hazards or for coping with them when they are encountered.

Participants of this program will gain a greater awareness of:

  • Parts and equipment.
  • How to safely load and secure a trailer.
  • How to negotiate different driving environments.
  • How to incorporate preventative safety measures.
  • The safest method of parking and backing with a trailer.
