  • Vehicle options
  • Maintenance
  • Driver behaviour
  • Fuel-efficient driving skills in an urban setting

Course Overview

This half-day course helps participants develop fuel efficient driving skills.

The course features two, 20-minute drives to measure fuel consumption as well as improve on fuel efficiency and safety skills.

Fuel efficiency tips

  • Look at least 12 to 15 seconds ahead of so you can anticipate traffic, maintain posted highway speeds, and adjust your speed to changes in traffic flow.  Avoid rapid acceleration that can produce more than 40 times the emissions of normal driving.
  • Be proactive; avoid traffic jams by using alternative routes or if possible by changing your commute times. Driving during peak hours with heavy traffic can mean long waits with your vehicle idling.

    Did you know?
26 per cent of Canada's emissions come from transportation.

  • Use the proper gear when driving up or down steep hills.
  • Accelerate smoothly when passing other vehicles or merging with traffic.
  • Check the inflation pressure of your tires at least once a month.
  • Keep your vehicle in top running condition so it burns less fuel and emits fewer pollutants.
  • Avoid idling your vehicle for more than 10 seconds – it's better to shut it off and restart it.
  • Don't use your vehicle for stowage of irrelevant articles. For every 50kg of useless weight being carried around, fuel consumption will increase.
