Course Overview*
The Collision Avoidance course upgrades driver competence by increasing knowledge / behaviour and basic driving skills. The course is designed for participants with significant driving experience.
The course also introduces advanced driving skills. We encourage participants wanting to further develop their advanced driving skills to take our Advanced Vehicle Control (AVC) course.
Participants learn through a combination of in-class and on-track sessions.
*Driver's who successfully complete this course qualify for a 3-point demerit reduction under the Light Vehicle Professional Driver Improvement course approved by Alberta Transportation.
Time Breakdown (1:2 instructor-client ratio)
Classroom Session: 3 hours 30 minutes
Consists of:
- Magnitude of crash problem
- Highway Transportation System
- Road hazards
- Proactive strategies
- Vehicle handling skills
Written and Vision Test: 30 minutes
These tests evaluate a participant's knowledge and vision.
On-road evaluation: 1 hour
Consists of 30 minute drive in an urban or rural setting in which the instructor observes and evaluates a wide range of driving behaviours.
In-vehicle skills session: 2 hours
Consists of skill training with instructor (slalom, threshold braking, simple evasive, brake-to-avoid manoeuvres, diamond drill and/or off-road recovery.
Remedial on-road training: 1 hour
Addresses the performance shortfalls that were highlighted in the road evaluation with a positive coaching/training session. A written report is also compiled based on the road evaluation and the remedial road training session.
Attitudinal assessment
An attitudinal assessment is made during the in-vehicle evaluations.
