Course Overview*

Participants learn through a combination of in-class and on-track sessions.

The course stresses the reactive aspect of driving rather than the defensive approach of traditional driving courses.

*Drivers who successfully complete this course qualify for a 3-point demerit reduction under the Light Vehicle Professional Driver Improvement course approved by Alberta Transportation.

Time Breakdown (1:2 instructor-client ratio)

Hours to complete: 8-9

Classroom Session: 3 hours
Focuses on generating awareness of the potential dangers in driving environments. Participants see the role of speed, friction, attitude and risk on the road, through an examination of AVC concepts.

Written and Vision Test: 30 minutes
Tests evaluate a participant's knowledge and vision.

Commute to and from track facility: 2 hours
In-vehicle coaching - these times will vary between 1 and hours, depending on the closeness of the classroom and track sites.

In-vehicle skills session: 2 hours 30 minutes
Skill training with instructor:

  • Slalom
  • Threshold braking
  • ABS braking
  • Simple evasive
  • Brake and avoid
  • Braking in a curve
  • Driving through a curve
  • Swerve-to-avoid
  • Ditch entry / exit
  • Complex evasive and controlled braking

Attitudinal assessment
The instructor also completes an attitudinal assessment during the in-vehicle evaluations.
