Course Overview*

The full-day Hazard Awareness training course is a full-day classroom and in-vehicle (road and track) program that provides drivers with a greater awareness of hazards they may encounter in their daily driving.

Drivers will also go over basic vehicle handling skills of braking, steering and vision.

*Drivers who successfully complete the full-day course qualify for a 3-point demerit reduction under the Light Vehicle Professional Driver Improvement course approved by Alberta Transportation.

Time Breakdown (1:2 instructor-client ratio)

Hours to complete: 7.5

Classroom Session

Introduction: 30 minutes
A brief introduction identifies areas of interest and learning regarding traffic safety issues.

Presentation/group discussion: 1 hour
Highway transportation system, driver fitness and impairments, and risk perception and management.

Presentation/group discussion:  1 hour 30 minutes
Vehicle and environmental hazards and solutions, hazardous roadway manoeuvres, strategies for survival and case studies.

Final knowledge test: 30 minutes

In-vehicle Sessions

On-road
Consists of on-road coaching.

On-track
Consists of in-vehicle skill training with instructor (serpentine, threshold braking and simple evasive manoeuvres.
