Mirrors and Blind Spots

When doing fleet on-road training, there are two common errors that AMA instructors notice:

  1. not using the mirrors properly; and
  2. not checking blind spots (the areas that will often not be visible in your mirrors).

These errors can lead to improper lane changes and collisions. In fact, there were 280 casualty collisions due to improper lane changes in Alberta during 2010. Here are some reminders on proper use of mirrors, lane positioning and scanning patterns:

  • Prior to your drive, make sure all mirrors and windows are clean and in good repair.
  • Keep windows free of obstructions, never put anything in your windows that could obstruct your view.
  • When driving in traffic, glance in mirrors every 5 to 8 seconds.
  • Any time prior to braking or slowing down, check your mirrors.
  • Prior to left turns check the mirror and blind spot in that direction.
  • Prior to right turns check the mirror and blind spot in that direction.
  • Prior to lane changes check your mirrors and blind spots.
  • Check your mirrors and blind spots when moving into or out of the curb lane.
  • Stay out of other drivers' blind spots.
  • Avoid passing on the right, especially large vehicles like trucks.
  • Prior to backing, make sure the way is clear behind you.

Remember mirrors are necessary for proactive driving, and for seeing what other road users are doing around you. Checking the mirrors should be brief glances just to help keep you aware of what is happening around your vehicle, your main focus should always be on the road ahead of you.
