What is Advocacy?

The Alberta Motor Association is the largest membership organization in the province, representing 1 in 3 households. AMA has been a leader in issues like mandatory seatbelt and bicycle helmet use, graduated driver's licensing, traffic fines and penalties and consumer protection.

Advocacy and Community Service (ACS) works to ensure the safety and security for members and the travelling public. As a leading advocate in traffic safety, protection for travellers, crime prevention and environment, AMA represents the interests of its members and the motoring public to industry and government.

Public policy issues of concern are identified by the AMA boards, the Advocacy and Community Services Board, management and staff.

Once identified:

  • Issues are researched, consultation is conducted and policy options are identified.
  • A proposed policy is presented to the ACS Board.
  • Once reviewed and approved by the ACS Board, the proposal proceeds to the annual general meeting.
  • Once approved by delegates at the annual general meeting, the policy becomes official AMA position.
