About AMA School Safety Patrol™

Since the late 1930's, the Alberta Motor Association has funded and coordinated the AMA School Safety Patrol™. Since its inception, no one has ever been killed or seriously injured at a patrolled crosswalk. Each year nearly 16,000 Grade 5 and 6 students and their teachers from approximately 490 schools commit their time and efforts to keep their fellow students safe.

Throughout the years, the School Safety program has grown within Canada and around the world to include 20 countries and within North America alone has over 600,000 School Patrollers and 60,000 schools.

In the 1920’s vehicles were becoming a popular mode of transportation for many individuals. With the increase of vehicles on the road came an increase in collisions. American Automobile Association (AAA) helped organize a program, which enabled older students to help younger ones with crossing streets on their way to and from school. Between 1922 and 1950 the total number of fatalities to children was reduced by 62 per cent.

The first Canadian patrols program started in the province of Quebec in 1929. It was accepted by society as a way to educate people about traffic safety and an effective way to reduce children injuries and fatalities. The Canadian Automobile Association is the largest sponsoring body of the Patrol Program in Canada and is proud to say that never in the history of the program has there been an injury or death resulting from the negligence of a school patroller.

In the late 1930's Mr. R.L. (Reg) Harvey in partnership with the Alberta Motor Association, introduced the first school safety program in Calgary. Eventually it grew in size and now includes over 500 schools and 17,000 patrollers across Alberta. The Alberta Motor Association partners with the police, teachers and parents to ensure the continual success of this program. This was the first traffic safety program undertaken by the Alberta Motor Association and the success is evident in the record performance achieved by all participants.
