Community and AMA - School Safety Patrol 75th Anniversary

Our History is Your Story

In 1937 there was a man with a dream. Looking out the window of Haultain School in Calgary he envisioned a “Schoolboy Patrol” in sharp uniforms, standing guard against the growing traffic with whistles and batons. When R.L (Reg) Harvey started the first school patrol in Alberta there was only one rule. The patrollers weren’t to enter the street to stop the milk wagons. Apparently the horses were slow to recognize their authority.

The next year we expanded to 18 crosswalks in Calgary and one in Edmonton. The AMA School Safety Patrol was born. 75 years later there are more than 16,000 patrollers guarding 500 crosswalks in every corner of the province.

For every patroller who has donned the vest and held the paddle, there is a story, a photo, a memory to share. Discover our rich history and share your story with the generations of patrollers who’ve been proud to wear that badge.
