The Alberta Motor Association (AMA) administers and delivers the Alberta Impaired Drivers Program (AIDP) for Alberta Transportation. A convicted impaired driver must take the program to have his/her operator's licence reinstated.

AIDP courses

Planning Ahead

A one-day course for first-time impaired drivers with the goal of preventing impaired driving.

Planning Ahead participants learn:

  • How to separate drinking and other drug use from driving by making an action plan.
  • The importance of zero tolerance for impaired driving.
  • How impairment by alcohol and drugs affects driving abilities.
  • How lifestyles centered around alcohol and other drugs leads to higher risk for impaired driving and other life problems.

Planning Ahead is held in 18 towns and cities across Alberta and is delivered to more than 4,000 participants annually.


IMPACT

A weekend live-in alcohol and/or drug use assessment and pre-treatment course for repeat impaired drivers with 2 or more conviction in a 10-year period.

The goals of IMPACT are to prevent impaired driving and reduce other alcohol and/or drug related problems among participants.

IMPACT participants:

  • Look at how alcohol and/or drug use has affected their lives.
  • Measure the problems their alcohol and/or drug use may have caused.
  • Create an action plan to deal with these problems.
  • Receive an Assessment Summary Report with recommendations for follow-up.

IMPACT is held in Calgary, Edmonton, St. Albert and Grande Prairie and is delivered to more than 1,000 participants annually.


Registering

You can register for either Planning Ahead or IMPACT only by telephone. Have your Motor Vehicle Identification Number (MVID) or licence number ready when calling. You can get an MVID or licence number from an Alberta registry agent.

    Payment and Fees

    Course fees

    • Planning Ahead $220
    • IMPACT $750

    All fees are due at registration

    • You must pay by credit card or prepaid Mastercard/VISA. (Note: "Impaired" will appear on your credit card statement.)

    Cancel if you cannot attend - no refund if you do not show

    If you cannot attend, you must call to cancel your course registration 48 hours before your scheduled course starts. If you do not attend and have not called to cancel, you will lose your program fee. You will have to re-register and pay the full fee again.

    What to bring

    Planning Ahead

    • Picture ID or two other pieces of ID.

    IMPACT

    • Picture ID or two other pieces of ID.
    • A current 10-year driver’s abstract. You will not be let into the course without one. (You can buy an abstract at any Registry outlet.)
    • Personal items (bedding and towels are provided).
    • Medication (insulin, asthma inhaler, etc.).
    • If you are a smoker, cigarettes as there are no cigarette machines on-site.
    • Extra snacks. (meals, beverages, and snacks are provided by the facility.)

    Planning Ahead Expectations

    • Arrive no later than 8:30 a.m. If you are late, you will not be admitted.
    • Arrive sober and drug-free. If you smell of alcohol or show signs of intoxication or withdrawal you will not be admitted. There are no exceptions.
    • Planning Ahead ends at 4:30 p.m.
    • Make transportation arrangements before the course starts.
    • Make sure you have been accepted into the course before your ride leaves.  

    IMPACT Expectations

    • Registration starts at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. No registrations will be allowed after 3:45 p.m.
    • You must have a current 10-year driver’s abstract at registration. You will not be allowed in the program without one. (You can buy an abstract at any Registry outlet.)
    • Arrive sober and drug-free. If you smell of alcohol or show signs of intoxication or withdrawal you will not be admitted. There are no exceptions.
    • IMPACT ends at 3:15 p.m. on Sunday.
    • Make transportation arrangements before the course starts.
